JOB DESCRIPTION Summary/Objective
The news editor leads the reporting team to ensure that U-B coverage is timely, accurate and representative of the Walla Walla Valley.
The ideal candidate has at least three years of editorial management experience and a firm basis in SEO and social media strategies as well as an instinctual knack for daily digital journalism, the judgment and temperament to supervise and motivate reporters, and the ability to write and edit quickly while maintaining high standards.
The news editor is a key member of the management team and assists the editor in developing and executing strategies and initiatives to achieve the long-range goals and mission of the U-B.
The news editor is accountable for news and feature content in print and online, for achieving the best possible community news product within the constraints of available resources, for helping formulate short and long-range planning and for achieving predetermined, agreed-upon department goals.
The news editor leads by example, both in the newsroom and as a public-facing representative of the U-B, in their professionalism, accessibility and commitment to quality community journalism.
The news editor reports directly to the editor and works closely with other newsroom leads and department editors to ensure overall smooth operation of content teams.
Supervisory Responsibility This position manages all reporting staff and is responsible for the performance management of those employees.
Required Education and Experience Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
2. Three or more years of experience as an editor at a news organization with a background in digital reader engagement.
3. Five or more years of experience as a reporter at a news organization with a background in social media engagement.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and driving record check.
